The Fly USA 1986 Regi David Cronenberg Manus Charles Edward Pogue, David Cronenberg Foto Mark Irwin Med Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz 94 min Bluray Engelsk tale, norsk tekst

The mad scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is on the verge of inventing teleportation. His passion captures the admiration of the journalist Veronica Quaife (Gina Davis). In one of his experiments he inadvertently fuses his body with a fly. As Bundle slowly transforms into a monster, Veronica tends to him, but the once brilliant scientist is losing the battle against the transformation into a mindless beast.

David Cronenberg’s adaption of The Fly balances the gaudy theme of the original 50’s version and the characteristics of the 80’s B-Movies. The result being both tastefully absurd and visually morbid, making this a masterpiece of the Body Horror genre. But more than entertaining, The Fly brings an artistic expression not often accredited to the genre of horror. Brundle’s teleportation device is inevitably his undoing. The machine cannot distinguish between Brundle and the fly, deconstructing man and beast alike and assembling the pieces indifferently.

Any conversation regarding Body Horror on film worth merit would address the works of David Cronenberg. The Fly shows the grotesque transformation of a mad scientist, caused by blind ambition gone awry. Cronenberg uses blood and guts purposefully to tell the story of mankind’s obsession to make itself obsolete.
