A team of documentary filmmakers find themselves following the profoundly insane hitman Ben. In the eyes of his family and friends he is cultured and charming, and he is seen as a poet and philosopher. In reality Ben stalks new victims in the wee hours of the night to amuse his ever growing bloodlust. It is plain to see the project is rapidly falling out of the young filmmaker’s control, but the urge to film something provocative is too great to stop.
The aesthetic choices made in Man Bites Dog could be viewed as a critique against the implied objectivity of documentaries. The film has been described as disturbing, raw and even twisted. However, the uncompromising depiction of violence in tandem with humor is far from mindless. The point is that despite how loathsome Man Bites Dog might be, the vast majority of audience’s laugh is at the intended satire, effectively making a pertinent statement regarding the audience itself. Although we might condemn the violence in the film, we indulge in Ben’s charm and humor.
